Tips to Prepare for Autumn Leaves

Autumn is a beautiful time of year with cooler weather, crisp breezes, and gorgeous foliage all around. However, those leaves can make it a bit messier than the other seasons when they start to fall from the trees. No need to worry though, with the right tools and preparation you can keep the foliage on your lawn under controls. We’ve put together some tips for you to use to help make your autumn just a bit easier:

  • Want to make some natural mulch? If you have plants on your lawn, or if you have friends who would appreciate the extra product, running over the fallen leaves with a lawnmower is a great way to make some natural mulch you can use.
  • Don’t plan to collect every leaf on a single day. If you want to wait until every last leaf is on the ground, you’re leaving yourself one monumental task to collect every single one in a day. Instead, take a bit of time every few days to rake up a good chunk of the leaves on your lawn and collect them in a bin or storage area so they don’t just blow back across your yard the next time a breeze picks up. Don’t worry about getting everyone one at once though – that’s an easy recipe for a never-ending headache. Just chip away at their numbers a bit at a time.
  • Take care of any pine needles before the leaves start to fall. Pine needles tend to fall first, and since they’re acidic you’ll want to collect them in a separate container from the leaves. Some plants prefer one over the other, and mixing that up will spell trouble for those plants.
  • Do you want to tackle wet leaves or dry leaves? Wet leaves are heavier and easier to collect with a rake, but dry leaves are easier to take care of with a leaf blower. Check the forecast if you’re deciding one option over the other.
