Tips to Get Fingernail Polish Out of Your Clothes, Carpet, and More

Painting your nails is a delicate process, and it’s always a good idea to take every precaution possible to make sure the polish only ends up on your nails. It just takes one stray fleck to cause a problem, or just one accidental elbow to knock the whole bottle over and cause a serious mess. Whether it spills on a nice white carpet, on a colorful couch, or over your own clothes, that doesn’t mean it’s the end. You need to ask quickly for the best effect, and make sure that you blot, not rub when cleaning. With some quick action and the right tools, getting the stain out isn’t impossible.

Clean Nail Polish from Your Clothes

If you spill nail polish on your clothes, your first instinct may be to grab a bottle of nail polish remover. However, the chemicals in it can react poorly with certain dyes used in clothing, so you may want to avoid that to be careful. If you spilled on colored clothing, a dry cleaning solvent or hairspray can help, and if you spilled on white clothing you should grab some hydrogen peroxide. After you’re done working on the stain, throw it in the laundry machine.

Clean Nail Polish from Your Furniture

Similar to clothing, nail polish remover can damage the fabric – in some cases, it may even dissolve the fabric. You can use a small dab to test it out on an unassuming corner to see whether or not it will cause damage. If you need to find another option, hydrogen peroxide or dry cleaning solvent can do wonders. After using either or both chemicals, use a damp sponge to gently wash out any excess and use a clean cloth to gently dry the affected area.

Clean Nail Polish from Your Carpet

You should have a few different cleaning products on hand depending on your carpet’s color. If it’s on the lighter side, non-acetone remover is your best option. If your carpet is darker or multi-colored, then you should try out some rubbing alcohol, hairspray, or hydrogen peroxide instead.
