Tips for Creating a House Cleaning Schedule

Keeping your home clean is important, but figuring out the best way to keep track of what needs to be cleaned, and when, can be confusing for anyone. Organizing your cleaning schedule and breaking it down into clear, manageable chunks will go a long way towards keeping everything tidy and keeping you from feeling overwhelmed at how much you have to do. As long as you keep hitting your targets, your home should stay just as clean as you want.

Break Your Schedule Down Into Chunks

Your first step should be to break down your schedule by what needs to be cleaned every day, week, month, season, and year. Some examples of what you can include:

  • Daily: Basic things you can do every day around the house like wiping down tables, emptying the trash, making sure there are no dirty dishes in the sink, making your bed, etc. will help keep the work from piling up.
  • Weekly: Things like sweeping and mopping the floors, wiping down the mirrors around your home, dusting cabinets and furniture, clearing out your fridge, etc. are good things to keep doing on a regular basis.
  • Monthly: Bigger projects like cleaning the tools you use to keep everything else in your home clean (dishwasher, washing machine, vacuum, etc.) and harder to reach locations like your light fixtures, vents, and more don’t need to be done all the time, but shouldn’t be neglected.
  • Seasonal: Some things take a lot of effort to clean, like the inside of your refrigerator, behind and underneath your furniture, the inside of your oven, etc. so you should schedule these cleans a couple times a year when your schedule is more flexible to give yourself time to make sure you give them a thorough scrub.
  • Yearly: Deep cleans of your vents, drapes, windows, carpets, and more only really need to be done once per year as long as you keep up with simple cleaning like dusting and vacuuming.
