The last several months of the year are notoriously chaotic, especially
for anyone with children or plans to host holiday gatherings. With Christmas
drawing near, you may be wondering how on earth you’re going to
get your home in tip-top shape before guests arrive. However, with these
quick and easy cleaning tips, cleaning your house doesn’t have to
be stressful, and you don’t have to clear your schedule to get it done.
The Smart Way to Prepare Your Home for Holiday Guests
Taking the stress out of holiday prep requires some forethought. In the
weeks leading up to parties and family celebrations, set yourself up for
a more peaceful holiday cleaning process by doing the following:
Prioritize. Identify all the major areas of your home that need to be cleaned before
guests arrive, then knock out them out in order of importance. (For most
people, the kitchen, living room, and guest bathroom are most critical
when entertaining visitors.)
Clean in phases. If you’re like most people, you probably don’t have the freedom
to clear your schedule, so it may make more sense to spend an hour or
two here and there cleaning certain spaces in your home. By divvying up
your cleaning into short spurts during the days and weeks before, you
can avoid racing to get it all done right before guests arrive.
Get the dishes done now. Many people break out their finest dinnerware during the holidays, and
getting it ready requires shining silver flatware, polishing glasses,
dusting chargers, etc. By knocking this off your list early on, you can
spend your time cooking and beautifying your space in the days before
your guests arrive.
Take the lazy way. When there’s an entire house to clean, you don’t have time
to scrub down every appliance—but there’s good news! You can
get your garbage disposal, oven, and stove clean with minimal elbow grease.
Clean your oven by heating it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, insert a casserole
dish filled with water and a half cup of vinegar, let it boil for half
an hour, and (after it’s cooled down) wipe off the grease with a
paper towel. You can clean your garbage disposal and eliminate lingering
odors by squirting soap into it and allowing it to run for 30-60 seconds.
If you have a conventional stove top that’s caked with food and
grease, gently pour boiling water onto the surface, allow the water to
cool, then wipe away the grime.
Freshen up. You may not have time to wash every blanket, throw rug, and towel, but
you may still be able to spruce them up and make them smell clean before
guests arrive. Save yourself as many laundry loads as you can by using
store-bought or homemade fabric freshener.
Bring in professional help. If your home needs deep-cleaning and you just don’t have the time
to get it done on your own, give yourself a gift this holiday season by
calling in a professional cleaning service. This can allow you to go about
your busy schedule and focus on other essential (and more fun) aspects
of hosting and preparation, such as cooking and decorating.
